New Island for the New Year

New Year’s Eve, Laura and Checkers went out for fun in Wellington.  There was a lot of live music in town, so I am sure they had a great time that night!

Brian and I stayed at our lovely bay-side B&B. I asked for a walk along the shore for a NYE adventure, but it turned out that people were setting off fireworks very near our place. So, we watched personal fireworks from our balcony to celebrate the new year. The next morning, it was off for a ferry ride to the South Island. Up until now, we had been on the Australian Plate. The big fault between the Australian Plate and the Pacific Plate, a fault much like the San Andreas, is on the South Island, and I for one, was looking forward to seeing the other side. It would not happen for another few days, however.

It was a cool, foggy morning. We could barely see the land while we were in the bay.

We started in the long bay on which we slept the previous three nights.

The ferry ride was windy!

This ferry was well equipped for the channel between the islands, the only part of the ride that was choppy. Getting to the South Island, we again went into a long, narrow bay before landing at Picton. We rented a car, drove to Blenheim and got a fancy dinner.
